European Family Learning Network (EFLN)
Grundtvig 4 project 2006 – 2009
The closing conference of this project had the title Family Learning: Delivering a Learning Society and was held in Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK from Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd September 2009. NALA has been involved as a partner in this project since 2006.
The conference had a good international flavour and content. Partners from England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania and Slovenia took part in running plenary sessions, workshops and discussions during the conference. Participants included family learning practitioners, school and pre-school teachers and parents’ representatives from Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Romania, Scotland and England.
The programme for the conference is shown below and gives a flavour of the range of information, ideas and research that were covered in both plenary sessions and smaller groups. Charles Desforges from the UK spoke about his research which showed clearly the importance of parents’ being involved in children’s learning. Julia Franz from Nuremberg described the range and variety of family learning programmes she discovered in her recent research in Bavaria. Lisa Vernon from Finland and the UK involved us all in considering what matters in adult learning.
Workshop topics included ideas for involving parents in children’s learning, developing quality frameworks for family learning with both adults and children, family learning in prisons and particular ideas for work with families from ethnic minorities.
The project partners in the Network met before during and after the conference to set up a European Family Learning Association which was launched at the closing dinner.
