We increase participation in adult literacy services and make it easier for more people to learn through distance education programmes. This work involves encouraging adults to improve their literacy through TV series and national advertising campaigns. Our excellent freephone support line provides information on local ETB adult literacy services and we also tutor people on the phone.
NALA research shows a number of barriers to participation in adult literacy tuition, including the stigma that still exists about the issue. Often people feel too embarrassed to return to learning and go to great extremes to hide their difficulties from their friends and family. Similarly some people had a negative experience of school in the past and associate returning to learning with that experience.
Much of our work involves breaking down these barriers, creating greater awareness of the supports that are available and motivating people to return to education through national awareness campaigns. Over the years this has included producing eleven TV series in association with RTE and more recently a national TV, Radio and Cinema advertising campaign, developed and sponsored by An Post.
During this time NALA has supported thousands of adults learn by posting workbooks to them and providing tutor support over the phone and internet. NALA operates a year round freephone support line and receives approximately 10,000 calls per annum from adults enquiring about how they can improve their literacy skills.
