Freephone 1800 20 20 65 or Freetext 50050.
The freephone support line is operational throughout the year and is staffed by experienced operators who can identify learner’s needs and advise them on literacy services available to them. Much of the work carried out on the phone involves listening to caller’s previous and often negative experience of education and reassuring them that adult education is a very positive experience.
Following this callers are usually referred to their local VEC literacy service for one-to-one or group tuition; linked with a literacy tutor who will tutor them over the phone; and/ or posted relevant material.
DVD ‘Take on learning. Take on life.’
Given the apprehension adults with literacy difficulties have about attending a literacy course, NALA posts an informational DVD that features literacy students talking about their reasons for attending a course, their fears and expectations and their positive experience since starting a course, to adults who ring the freephone. In this DVD NALA provides specific information on adult literacy services and also a handy map of Ireland with every literacy centre’s contact number marked on it.
