The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) submission to the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science’s public consultation for their new Statement of Strategy.

In this submission we highlighted recent research findings that 21% of adults in Ireland have literacy needs, and 24% of adults in Ireland have numeracy needs. We called on the Department to respond to this in their statement of strategy.

We said that the Department should prioritise social inclusion and basic skills. And we made specific recommendations for adult literacy, around:

• data;
• resourcing; and
• literacy friendly services.
