NALA Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies exclusively to this website, https://www.nala.ie

This page was prepared by independent experts in accessibility audits, Vially, in November 2025.

It tells you about six things about NALA and accessibility on its main site:

  • National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) is committed to accessibility
  • NALA’s accessibility compliance status for its main site nala.ie
  • How Vially arrived at this status
  • How compatible NALA’s site is with browser and assistive technology, as well as a note on technical specifications
  • Remaining non-accessible content
  • How you can give feedback to NALA on accessibility issues

NALA’s commitment to accessibility

NALA is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with European Union (Accessibility Requirements of Products and Services) Regulations 2023.

This website is designed to comply with the technical standard for websites and mobile apps, EN 301 549 v.3.2.1. This closely follows level ‘AA’ of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 level AA.

Compliance status of NALA’s main website

This website is partially compliant with technical standard EN 301 549 v.3.2.1 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 level AA. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

This means some content is still non-accessible content.

Partially compliant site.

NALA has addressed all major accessibility blockers.

Pages on this website have titles that accurately describe their content. Some pages also have heading elements that match the title of the page.

That said, some of NALA’s main site’s web content is still non-accessible content. NALA is working to address this content.

NALA is currently working with Vially and Vision Ireland to ensure we meet accessibility standards. It wants to continually improve your experience of its site and adhere fully to the required accessibility standards.

How NALA accessibility compliance status was developed

The Statement is based on a combination of manual and automated accessibility testing, using multiple platforms:

  • Windows JAWS (Job Access With Speech) and NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), both screen readers used in Windows operating systems.
  • Mac (VoiceOver), a screen reader used in Mac operating systems
  • iOS (VoiceOver) a built‑in screen reader for iphones and ipads
  • Android (TalkBack) and their native accessibility tools, a built‑in screen reader for android phones.

Vially created a detailed issue log to measure against WCAG 2.2 standards. These issues were presented to the NALA development team who amended these issues, bringing the website more in line with WCAG 2.2 AA compliance.

Remaining non-accessible content

Despite our best efforts to ensure the accessibility of this website, NALA is aware of some of its limitations, which it is working to fix. Below is a list of known limitations we know and potential solutions. Please contact NALA at 01 4127900 or email info@nala.ie if you encounter an issue not listed below.

Known limitations for this website:

Keyboard and screen reader navigation – these are not yet accessible on parts of NALA’s main website.

Skip to content link - this is not yet in place.

Images – we are currently working through images to add alternative text (ALT text).

Forms – Working through forms to make them more accessible.

Videos – we are currently working through videos to add accessible captions and/or other media alternatives such as transcript, audio description.

Colour contrast – we are adjusting the colour contrast of all text, elements and backgrounds to reach a higher contrast ratio.

Moving content – we are currently adding alternative functionality to all moving, blinking or auto-scrolling content across the website.

Link text, buttons and graphical elements – we are working to remove links named ‘click here’ and ‘find out more’ where possible. We will then give link text, buttons and graphical elements clear labels.

Correctly structured content with good heading usage – we are creating more logical heading structures on our pages.

Cross operating system compatibility – has not yet been implemented in every section. We are currently updating this functionality so our site will work better on desktops and mobiles and different operating systems such Windows, Mac, Android, etc.

Mobile navigation – along with cross operating system compatibility, once we update our cross operating system, we will audit the site for mobile navigation and ease of use for screen readers.

Third-party content – these are areas of our website controlled by third-party companies, such as the cookies. We do not fund, develop or control these. However, we are working to resolve as many issues related to these areas as we can.
