Launch of ‘A guide to money: managing it and keeping it safe’
On 19 March 2026, Robert Troy, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance launched ‘A guide to money: managing it and keeping it safe’.
The guide was developed by the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) and funded by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) through the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy.
Money and the way we manage it is changing all the time. With so many new options for people, it can be difficult to keep on top of them all.
This new guide aims to help people understand the different types of money, the words we use to talk about it, and how we manage our money and keep it safe. It also lets readers know where they can find more information and advice about money in a very clear way.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of State Robert Troy noted:
“Enhancing financial literacy is a key Government priority, particularly in an increasingly digital world. Everyone should have the confidence to deal with financial matters and feel empowered to manage their finances. Unfortunately, Ireland lags behind some of our peers when it comes to financial literacy, which is why this Government launched a dedicated National Financial Literacy Strategy last year. The launch of this Guide today by NALA is a welcome step in our wider financial literacy goals, and I am sure that it will have a positive impact on those on who want to be more financially literate.”
Grainne Griffin, Director of Communications, Consumer Information and Financial Education at the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said:
“The CCPC is delighted to fund this vital resource. Financial education is an important part of our work, and we’re committed to ensuring access to financial education for everyone in Ireland. This is a straightforward, accessible guide to money. Understanding how to manage your money is essential to financial wellbeing, and this guide will be an invaluable resource for members of the public and financial literacy educators. There’s a huge amount of information out there, but between unqualified finfluencers and sophisticated investment scams it can be hard to know who to trust and where to start. People need clear, reliable, impartial information, and that’s what this free guide provides.”
Yvonne McKenna, Director of the Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) National Programme Office stated:
“Literacy is much more than reading and writing. It affects so many aspects of our daily lives. Financial literacy is a key part of the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy, and I am delighted to see this new guide launched today. The way that financial information is presented to us can often be complicated and confusing. We hope that the guide will be a welcome support to many and is another important step towards ensuring that all adults in Ireland have the literacy skills to meet their needs.”
Colleen Dube, Chief Executive Officer, National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) noted:
“We know from recent research that around 700,000 adults in Ireland struggle with basic reading and 850,000 struggle with basic maths. Given we all must understand and engage with financial information, online payments and safety, we created this guide to try to demystify money. This guide builds on twenty years of NALA’s financial literacy work including our Learn with NALA Managing Personal Finances eLearning course. We were delighted to collaborate with literacy and financial literacy colleagues on the guide. We hope that readers find it useful and look forward to getting feedback and creating future editions of the guide.”
Printed copies of the guide are available from the sixteen Regional Literacy Co-ordinators, National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and the Adult Literacy for Life National Programme Office in SOLAS.
